A Low Overhead High Performance Buffer Management Replacement Algorithm
Shared by Simon Harris2Q is a good buffering algorithm (giving a 5-10% improvement in hit rate over LRU for a wide variety of applications and buffer sizes and never hurting), having constant time overhead, and requiring little or no tuning. It works well for the same intuitive reason that LRU/B works well: it bases buffer priority on sustained popularity rather than on a single access.
